QotD: What's in a name?
What is the meaning behind your birth name?
Submitted by turtlegod.
Must you ask? My name is a combination name, a dreadful Filipino practice. Fe comes from my father, Fedencio. Gail comes from my mother, Abigail. Can you say lovechild? I say, Eww. I just hate the fact that my name comes from a combination. I always ask them, Did you never think of another name? Nahh, my mother says, it's always that.
Sometimes I think my parents think that I'm insulting their choice. And I feel bad. But my annoyance with the combo as a concept is greater than my sense of guilt. I am a bad (combo) child.

on the bright side, you have a unique name! i've always wondered what's with the combination names. I think it's a Pinoy thing, no?
my name on the other hand, is inspired by my two grandmothers... i'm just glad my parents decided to "americanize" my Lolas' names, instead of directly copying their beautiful but very old-fashioned names. ^_^ don't even guess what their names are!
yeah, it's a unique name... but what does one do with unique names that get butchered everytime... even by my own self? i promise, it's all unintended. it's just a bit... unpronounceable.
i had my chance to change it though, and i restrained myself. could it be the power of that name chosen in love. ewww. nah, i can't imagine myself not going by that name, is all.
ikaw, ano ang plano mo sa anak mo? as i've read in "the stuff of thought: language as a window into the soul," naming kids is most people's chance of leaving a long-lasting/forever mark on the world. ^_^
hahaha! i made the mistake of telling some people what my Lolas' names were, and they ended up calling me by that name. *cringe* It's super old-fashioned talaga, parang pang-Lola!
how do you pronounce your name anyway? Is it one word? I think parents should think about how their child would feel if they gave them certain names.
I have a list of names that I love! I have to trim it down and think about it really hard. But I wouldn't name my kid after a famous person or a literary character (although tempting), just because its such a burden.

but you didn't change your name after all! ^_^ good child!
i feel you on the burden of a popular name. what's interesting is naming a kid and then finding out it's going to be famous a few years later.
oohhh, mispronounced names are so irritating!
i know what you mean! i hate it when you have two names but people pronounce it as one word. Pareho tayo! Parang hello... there's a pause in between the two names! my gradeschool and high school classmates use my two names when they call me. :P
pero the thing that has irked me the most is how people here butcher my last name!!!
mine and my siblings names came from all over.. mine is Russian, my sister Jehann is Hebrew but the same as Anwar Sadat's wife, Niccolo is Italian and Camille is French. My dad didnt agree on us having Christian names. Strangely all of us have double letters and our names dont go more than 7 letters each LOL
My parents got my name from a writer in Time Magazine. A lot of people think I am Russian coz of my name. A lot of people mispronounce my name as well. But there are only 3 that I will take: Rahysa, Ray-sa and Raa-ee-sa.
I like the name Sofia. I wont give my child a name of a famous person too. I am glad I only discovered people having the same name and spelling that I do later in life, like now LOL when I was smaller I thought I was the only one with that name. I think I will give it to my dad to suggest a name for my child if ever. He and my mom I think did a good job LOL I like Emma too and was thrilled when Rachel in "Friends" named her daughter Emma. For boys I like Enzo but I am not liking Lorenzo much. I like Tristan. I like Pocholo too. No Justin for me anymore. We have enough Justins in the family as of now we have 7 or 8 ba?
i like sofia too. so far, all the sofias i know are bright and older-beyond-their years kind of ladies. i know of two sisters, the elder is named emma and the younger is named sofia. sophie was my sophie at my old job, and my emma has always been lovely. she tells me that she loves me and gives me great bear hugs. yeah, they've moved to a different place now, so i don't get to see them. lovely kids... that's why those two names are special to me, too.

I like Sofia nga parang wise and mature and strong and yet sweet. Thats the reason why I like the name. Emmas naman I think are so malambing LOL
sofia, i think means wisdom. and you're so right. my sophie is wise and serious but so sweet. she was my stink bug. when i say, "stink bug," she sways side to side, and says, "imma stink bug." and she was 1.5 yrs at that time. and masarap yakapin (she likes giving hugs too) dahil michelin man rolls yung taba nya, but she's solid.
and my emma is so malabing. she's like a little teacher. she used to help me by reading to the younger kids, and being so gentle with them. and she's one kid who would stay in your embrace after a hug just so you can talk to each other.
hay, naku. all this talk about names is making me miss my kids. i'll go look at my scrapbook now. my babies are all in there. :D
